Save Our Trash, Recycle!

¡¡

Between 4 to 9 August 2008, our institute successfully organized the annual Recycling Campaign under the Health and Environment Committee led by Jocelyn Shen under the theme, ¡®Save our trash, recycle!¡¯.

Prior to the actual day, the H&E committee had organized promotional activities to ignite students¡¯ interest in participating in this event. An Environmental Talk during assembly was given by Iskandar Shah, a Rotarian, and a power-point presentation that launched the intergroup recycling competition.

Many students were attracted to the intergroup recycling competition as the winning group would be given 6% of the gross income of the total recyclables sold as prize money. Points were given to each class based on the category and weight of the recyclables collected. There were three main categories, paper products, plastics and scrap metal where it was compulsory that 20% of the total weight was to be made up from plastic.

This year, the H&E Committee managed to collect 23 tons of recyclables as compared to 8 tons last year, raking in a total of about RM3,800 and this year¡¯s winner was S1A.  The student council later decided to donate the prize money of RM228 to a charity called ¡°Feed the hungry¡±

On review of the campaign it was decided that the campaign had achieved two main goals, namely, one it gave opportunity for the groups in the Institute to work together with a common aim to win the competition. Secondly, the campaign has been effective in converting awareness for recycling into action since the competition required the students to sort out what they had collected.
